A new install will be slow at first, while templates/CSS/JavaScript compile. It should be fast the second time you come back to something. If things are slow and:

you're not on ridiculously cheap hosting
you haven't turned on a large number of blocks to display at once (compared to the amount of functionality comparable sites may show)
you haven't disabled the caches
